Hemming & Folding Main Fabric & Inserting Interlining

Get your ruler, pins, needle & thread at the ready, we're now going to start constructing your blind! Watch the video below and then be sure to read through the summary points beneath it afterwards.

So to summarise:

  • Lay your main fabric face down and make 4cm (1.6") folds along the 2 side edges.
  • Turn a double 5cm (2") fold on the bottom to create a hem. Leave the top of the blind unfolded.
  • Open the folds out and lay the interlining on top of the wrong side of the main fabric. Align the side edges of the interlining with the fold lines you have just made, and align the bottom edge of the interlining with the uppermost hem fold (i.e. 10cm (3.9") above the bottom edge of the main fabric).
  • Fold the bottom and side of the main fabric back up and over the edges of the interlining and pin in place.
  • Serge stitch along the two side edges to attach the fabric folds to the interlining. Start sewing approximately 10cm (3.9") down from the top edge of the blind and finish just above the hemline, securing your stitching at either end with a french knot. No stitches should be visible on the front of the blind.
  • Leave hem pinned.
  • Put your main fabric to one side.

Great, let's move on to the next module where we'll be working on the lining fabric.
